Postcard Prompts for week of Jan. 27, 2025

We don’t need to take the outrages of the new administration in silence. Please write to our leaders and let them know what you think. A postcard is more effective than an email or phone call because it is tangible and represents greater effort.

Please take a minute and write out a few cards.

To: Sen. Elissa Slotkin, 315 W. Allegan Street, Suite 207, Lansing, MI 48933, and Sen. Gary Peters, 124 West Allegan Street, Suite 1400, Lansing, MI 48933 Phone: (517) 377–1508

News reports indicate that you voted in favor of the Laken-Riley Act, Trump’s bill to let immigrants be deported if they are merely accused of a crime, even shoplifting, and even if they have not been convicted. This seems like a violation of due process and has a great potential for abuse. I fear your vote signals a willingness to cave to Donald Trump rather than fight for Democratic values. I would like an explanation of your vote in support of this measure and how it squares with what Democrats believe.

Thank you for joining 17 other states in filing a lawsuit against the president’s attempt to repeal the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of birthright citizenship with the stroke of a pen. The constitution cannot be amended by just an executive order. I support your legal challenge and I hope it is just the first of many actions you take to stand up for Democratic values in the face of this lawless administration.

Thank you for voting to block consideration of S6, a measure to force health care professionals to provide medical care for infants born following an attempted abortion. This bill would have kept parents from making decisions about care for newborns delivered early following a fatal fetal diagnosis. I hope you will continue to stand up to Republicans as they try to interfere with the reproductive freedom of Michigan women.

Republicans claim to be the party of law and order, but Donald Trump just pardoned or commuted the sentences of nearly 1,500 people who invaded our Capitol on Jan. 6 to try to stop the certification of President Biden’s 2020 election. Yet you have said nothing in protest of the release onto our streets of many violent criminals. Nor have you said a peep about his pardon of a drug dealer who was responsible for the deaths of six people. It’s time for you to stand up and protect your constituents from violent criminals.
