A Fowlerville woman selected by the VFW twice as its Michigan teacher of the year is running for the county commissioner in the northwest corner of Livingston County.

Michelle Spisz, who has an extensive record of involvement in and service to the community, says as a commissioner she will hear voters’ concerns and make decisions based on the best information available.

“I am passionate about listening to what voters feel the community needs,” she said.

“I have a strong sense of community. A passion for veterans and education is at the heart of my race. I promise to critically evaluate the proposals for change within Livingston County and continue to make the county a better place to live.”

Spisz is running for the Democratic nomination for county commissioner in District 1, which includes the village of Fowlerville, northern Handy Township, and all of Conway, Cohoctah, and Howell Township.

Spisz’s District will be Fowlerville, north Handy Towship and all of Conway, Cohoctah, and Howell Townships.

“As a daughter of a veteran, my father taught me at a young age that if you will not take a stand for what you believe in you cannot expect others to stand up for you. I am passionate, intelligent, and committed to making informed choices. I believe voters deserve a choice and a candidate willing to listen and help make the best choices I can to meet the needs of the citizens of Livingston County. Livingston County is a wonderful place to live, grow, and enjoy, and I want to make it even better.”

Spisz has taught in Fowlerville Community Schools for more than 15 years and currently teaches science and yearbook at the junior high. She has been VFW Local 6464 Teacher of the Year for 2019 and 2020 at the local, district, and state level for grades 6–8. She is a board member at the Giving Barn, an all-volunteer nonprofit providing aid to families in need; a supporter of Torch and Torch 180; recipient of WHMI’s Making the Grade Award; an adoption and foster care advocate; vice president of the Fowlerville Education Association; president of the Pineview Homeowners Association; runner-up for Homemaker of the Year at Fowlerville Fair in 2021, and a member of American Legion 141 Auxiliary.

Spisz has two bachelor of arts degrees from the University of Michigan-Dearborn, one in education and one in anthropology, and masters of science education degree from Lawrence Technological University.

She and her husband, John, have six sons ranging in age from 15 to 22.
