Hartland Woman Wants to be Democratic Voice on the Board
A Hartland woman is seeking a spot on the township board in order to add a new viewpoint to the panel.
Joanna Vantaram is a long-time county resident who says she is excited to run.
“I want to be a Democratic voice on the board, to ensure that decisions made about our township value the viewpoints of all our citizens. I am excited at the prospect of being able to serve this community that I love so much,” she said.
Vantaram grew up in Fowlerville, the daughter of a union carpenter and a union educator.
“We have always been a strong Democratic family that lived in a county that is traditionally very strong Republican,” she said.
“Most of my life our ballots on Election Day did not offer any candidates on the Democratic side, except for the time in the 80s when my Dad ran as a Democrat for County Clerk.
“As time passes, it is clear that there are more people like me in the county who want to be able to have Democratic choices on our local ballots. I decided if I wanted to see Democrats on my ballot, then I better get the ball rolling and file to run for office.”
Vantaram has been a teacher for 26 years. She is married and has one daughter.
