A Green Oak lawyer has filed for Livingston County Clerk with a pledge to defend the integrity and fairness of elections against the false claims of election deniers.

Bill Bon says he would be proactive in restoring the confidence of Livingston County voters in the security of the electoral system.

“The steady drumbeat that there is something wrong with American elections must be rebutted rather than be allowed to go unanswered. I would seek to carry the message of election integrity to groups throughout the county and work hard to educate voters about the checks and balances built into our system,” he said.

For example, Bon said he would work with local clerks to publicize the dates of public accuracy tests around the county so that more voters can attend and have a chance to see how the machines are tested before each election.

Bon ran unopposed in the Democratic primary on Aug. 6.

“Preservation of the American republic, in the face of the MAGA crowd, seeking power in defiance of the will of the voters, is the top issue in the November election, regardless of the office involved,” he said.

“Electing a Democrat to the clerk’s office would send a message that county voters are fed up with being ruled by a deeply unserious Republican Party. A prime example is the pandering to the MAGA crowd, in declaring the county a ‘constitutional county,’ prepared to defy the rule of law. That’s a threat to our democracy.”

Bon is the former general counsel for the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Division of Teamsters International Union. He also is a former president of UAW Local 122.

He graduated with honors from Kent State University with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He received his juris doctorate from Akron Law School.

He and his wife have lived in Livingston County for 35 years.
